Joel B. Ntwatwa
Project participant in Uganda
'My name is Ntwatwa Joel Benjamin, I am 22 years-old pursuing a degree in Information Technology in Makerere University. I took part of the Crossing Borders programme for two years working on poetry. I began writing in 1996, just a short story about a human and a robot friend; I never finished it because my friend went with the book when we finished Primary Leaving Exams. I however continued writing but took to poetry in late 1997 and progressed with it from then on. What inspired me was love. I thought that I should write poems like those I heard being used by lovers - that's how my poetry grew. I have won three awards at national level - National Book Trust of Uganda Awards (NABOTU) in 1999, 2000 and 2001 for works in poetry. I have ventured a little into prose and plays.'
